St. Patrick's Day is celebrated each year on March 17th, the saint's religious feast day and anniversary of the death of St. Patrick in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday over 1,000 years. Each year on St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families and descendants traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.
It has become tradition that on this day Irish parades take place throughout the world. Interestingly, however, the first parade held to honor St. Patrick’s Day took place not in Ireland but in the United States. Today, the St. Patrick’s Day parade is the world’s oldest civilian tradition with people of all backgrounds celebrating all things Irish, especially throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. Irish patriotism among immigrants throughout the world has remained strong, and it can be said that ‘Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!’.
Today, approximately 1 million people annually take part in Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin alone, with multi-day celebrations featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions and fireworks shows taking place throughout Ireland and around the world.
